Ventricular tachycardia detected by an implantable loop recorder in a patient with syncope of unknown origin

Abstract

|
Patients with syncope of cardiac origin have poor outcome, therefore implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy is indicated in most of cases. The implantable loop recorder (ILR) is useful in patients with infrequent unexplained syncope when noninvasive testing is negative. The present case with unexplained syncope showed only nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) in the electrophysiological study (EPS). VT associated with cardiac arrest was finally detected by the ILR, and the patient underwent ICD implantation. Therefore, even nonsustained VT induced by EPS may have clinical significance in patients with unexplained syncope in terms of occurrence of sudden cardiac death.
